Cabela's

Oh My Goodness!!! Lori had told us about Cabela's but until you are actually there...

Talk about culture shock!!! We are from Portland where there are signs that say, "Stop Animal Slavery".

Well, here in Cabela's that exactly what they purport as well. Only I don't think that's what the Hawthornites meant!

We stopped here on the way home from the Saturday session of General Conference.

This is the view from the front door and the guy you see in the forefront. The one who looks as if he is in costume and works for Cabela's? Yeah, he's just a typical customer!

One of the first things I noticed was this flock of ducks overhead. I know you can't see a flock...only one duck that I zoomed in on but let me tell you...there was an entire flock!

As we began our tour of the enormous building one of the many arcade games caught our attention.

This one is called Big Buck and from its name you can discern that you are supposed to shoot Bambi's father.

There were children at every game and sometimes lines.

This place is a taxidermist's dream.

Though the next photo is of mounted fish there was also a huge aquarium.

I tried to get a photo of the aquarium but alas, it was much too dark.

I had no idea that there were this many fishing poles in the world. And this shot represents about 1/4 or less of the space devoted to fishing.
As far as you could see in any direction from where this photo was taken there was nothing but rods, reels and all that goes with them.

Not content with fishing?

Then let's move on to more interesting game.

If you look closely the lions have attacked this beautiful animal. There were lines of hunter dads standing at the railings explaining to their little boys about hunting.

Too much like the character in The Lion King, I wonder what the kids had to say about this.

You can see the beautiful sets that were displayed throughout the store.

Most of it was just plain freaky!

This porcupine, or as my kids always said, Porky Pine, was part of a scene that was perhaps 20 feet or more long and about the same in height.

I'm not sure how tall this polar bear was but I would guess that it stood about 8 or 9 feet tall.

Another little boy enjoying his hunting adventure

As we headed upstairs Matthew grabbed this interesting fish pillow and posed for me with it.

Such wonderment! I pictured myself trying to decorate our Texas home with some of these, um, these, um interesting items.

Ack! Get it out of my space!

You remember the Jackaloupe? The first one I saw was while we were working for the ice show. I believe that it was in Arkansas. Yep, part Jack Rabbit, and part Antelope. Explain that to your children!

Ya Huh. Nuh Uh.

Though I knew it was impossible I remember asking the clerk if that was really true and having her laugh at me.

More interesting choices for home decor.

This is a talking moose that invites you in to the shooting gallery.

Lori and Matthew couldn't resist and soon with tokens in our hands we took our turns shooting at laser targets.

Dad had a lot of fun while we looked on and kidded him.

I didn't really know about the V and so when Neal finally told me how to align the sight I honed in on one target and kept shooting at it.

Amid the chants of "Cheater" I still got the highest score.
I am shameless, I know but I figured that I had to make up for the fact that I didn't know what I was doing.

The machines kept "stealing" our tokens so both Lori and Matthew retrieved some. Yeah, some weren't even ours.

The little boy on Lori's right came over to see what she was doing and asked how many tokens the machine had stolen from her and then told her that it had taken one of his too. She handed him his token and he was very happy.

This is a real plane hanging from the ceiling of Cabela's.
Neal bought some cashew nuts. We were surprised to find out that they were covered in cinnamon sugar. They were good and soon that cone was emptied.
We enjoyed our time at Cabela's and highly recommend it as a tourist stop.
Thank you Lori and Matthew for taking us there.
