Happy Birthday Neal 2008

We had an interesting weekend. It began early by watching the coverage of President Hinckley's funeral. A sad way to begin the day. We had made arrangements for Don's family to come down after church on Sunday to celebrate Dad's 62nd birthday. Great Grandma Coates was looking forward to seeing Don, Gaylynne and the children. It has been a long time since we have all gotten together.

Neal and I headed for Costco to get some pepperoni for the pizza Don was going to make for Sunday Dinner. On the way home we were flagged by another motorist who said that we had a flat tire. It was hardly noticeable as we drove and I don't know how long we drove on the flat. Anyway we pulled into the parking lot of Blockbuster so we could check it out. Sure enough...flat as a pancake! Thank you, Don and Gaylynne, for the safety kit you got for us a few years ago. Neal got out the little battery powered pump and hooked it up. While the tire was filling with air Neal went into the video store and rented the next season of Aliens. We are enjoying that series very much. It is a kind of silly and a little serious spy series.

We sat at Les Schwaab for the next couple of hours and had the tire repaired. By the time we got home we were exhausted though we hadn't done any physical work at all.
I had read an article about having a goal with walking. It's called 10K a day. The idea is to walk 10,000 steps per day. So I went to Walmart to get a couple of pedometers. There were so many to choose from. From $4.88 to $249.00. I thought that I would just get us the cheapy ones to see how far we are actually walking now. What we learned was a little depressing. My 1/2 hour walk was only giving me about 3500 steps. Then I was only getting another thousand or so with chores. If I went to the store that was good for about 1500. Not nearly enough to get to 10,000. I spend quite a bit of time during the day sitting at the computer. Well, anyway I'm trying to solve the problem by getting up and moving more. It's so cold outside it is hard for me to get motivated.
Well, back to my Saturday story. What a bad day it was for the Coates' and Kimberlins with their cars! We got a call from Don who is dealing with snow and learned that somehow his car had ended up in a ditch. We were happy that he hadn't been hurt. No word yet on damage to the car. Brian called and said that they were headed for California and worried about the snow so Neal loaned him our tire chains since the snow hasn't affected the Portland metro area much. Then we got a call from Matthew regarding the intermittent and unexpected sounding of their car alarm at all hours of the day and night. Neal felt so helpless because he just didn't know about Saab's and all of the dealerships in our area were closed. Armed with a soldering iron and knowledge that Matthew had from his former job they were able to fix their alarm problem. As I thought back on the day I thought it was so odd that we all had had problems with our cars that day.

We did our studying for tomorrow's classes and prepared for our Church meetings and then watched Alias. It was hard to keep my eyes opened...well, until it was time to go to bed and then I was wide awake. Neal was awake by 4:00 and that is about the time I was finally able to fall asleep.
We actually got to walk to church together and that was a treat. We attended Branch Council meeting together. Everything at church went smoothly. I dropped off food for the Break the Fast meal and headed for home to get ready to drive down to Newberg where Mom, Neal, and I celebrated his birthday. Don and Family were snowed in. I'm not even sure they were able to go to church. John Plock lives just down the hill from Don and Gaylynne and he said that he couldn't get out of his driveway!

We had a lovely time with Grandma. I had boiled some spareribs so they were ready for the grill when we got to her home. She baked some potatoes, made garlic bread, and put out a relish tray. After dinner we enjoy some cheesecake. I had bought one of those great big cheesecakes from Costco hoping that Teresa and the kids would be joining Don and his family and Grandma at our home for a birthday dinner. However, the snow changed everything. Still we enjoyed out time at Grandma's home very much.

Dad installed a roller ball type mouse (it has a golf-ball sized ball on the top of the mouse) on Grandma's computer which is so much easier to move than the standard. We watched a couple of Conference talks. One given by President Hinckley and one given by President Monson. It was after 9:00 by the time we got home. We watched President Hinckley's funeral again before we went to bed.

Oh, my! I miss you so much! And this doesn't have anything to do with the ribs. (Okay, maybe a little to do with the ribs) But I really can't wait to come home one of these days!
